What is
UK Music?
UK Music is an umbrella organisation representing the collective interests of
the UK’s commercial music industry, from artists, musicians, songwriters and
composers, to major and independent record labels, managers, music publishers,
studio producers and collecting societies.
Our members
UK Music's members include the Association of Independent Music (AIM), the
British Academy of Composers & Songwriters (BAC&S), BPI (British Recorded Music
Industry) Limited, the PRS for Music, the Music Managers Forum (MMF), the Music
Publishers Association Limited (MPA), the Musicians Union (MU) and Phonographic
Performance Limited (PPL).
Our core goals are to promote awareness and understanding of:
- The interests of the UK music industry at all levels
- The value of music to society, culture and the economy
- Intellectual property rights and how they protect and promote
creativitiy
- The opportunities and challenges for music creators in the digital age
- Policy and Government relations
We engage in policy development on issues of relevance to our membership at
UK, EU and international levels, particularly where measures are proposed that
would have an impact on our members. We aim to ensure that their voice is heard
and that policymakers continue to recognise the important cultural, social and
economic contribution that the UK music industry makes the UK and the world.
Policy within the EU
Since most of the copyright legislation is harmonised at European level, e.g.
through the Copyright Directive, it is particularly important that the interests
of the UK Music industry are represented in Brussels.
In Europe we work with several Departments of the Commission, in particular
DG Internal Market, DG Education and Culture, and DG Information Society; we
also regularly liaise with Members of the European Parliament to promote the UK
music industry's view.
Education
The creative industries play an increasingly vital role to the future success
of the UK. Encouraging young people to be aware of the value of creativity and
develop a respect for creators' rights is an important part of this new
landscape. Equally important is equipping them with the right mix of business
and enterprise skills to ensure a vibrant and healthy music sector in the UK in
the future. We are at the heart of discussions on creative education and skills
development, and are involved in a number of education and awareness
initiatives.
Research
UK Music conducts a number of research projects into consumer habits and
industry trends as an exercise in the development of our industry.
