Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute

background

Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute (QMIPRI), is one of the foremost intellectual property research institutes established in the world-renowned Centre for Commercial Law Studies.

An important part of the Institute's mission is to deliver research and information for a broader public benefit which was one of Sir Roy Goode's original visions when he first established the Centre in 1980 within Queen Mary's School of Law, dedicated to the postgraduate teaching and research of commercial and intellectual property law.  This also included the establishment of a Chair in Intellectual Property Law with a generous private endowment from noted inventor Dr Herchel Smith, the Herchel Smith Chair in IP Law and the ultimate creation of today's dedicated research Institute under the directorship of the Herchel Smith Professor.

As a centre of dedicated IP research, the Institute is also an important community for the many international scholars undertaking LLM and PhD studies at Queen Mary and the Centre for Commercial Law Studies,  providing students with a particularly stimulating and motivating study environment. This combination of research and intellectual excellence with the particular commercial realities of intellectual property practice and policy is one of the most striking qualities of the Institute and its history within Queen Mary's.  The Institute is very proud of its long-standing cooperation between scholarly research excellence and professional practice and, from its new home in Lincoln's Inn Fields, looks forward to a continuing collaboration with IP practitioners.

From its formation, the Centre for Commercial Law Studies has collaborated with the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys in the education of trainee patent attorneys and those seeking to enter the profession. This training continues today with programmes for patent and trade mark professionals that are among the most respected in the UK, attracting scholars from all over the world.

The current Herchel Smith Professors of Intellectual Property Law and co-directors of the Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute are Michael Blakeney and Johanna Gibson.
