Institution of Engineering and Technology

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (the IET) is the largest professional engineering society in Europe and the second largest of its type in the world, with more than 150,000 members, and a history which can be traced back to 1871.

The IET represents the profession of electrical, electronic, information technology (IT), manufacturing and systems engineering and related sciences.

IET activities in which Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are key include: -

·         Issuing wiring regulations for dwellings, buildings and industry; and taking a leading part in the formulation of national and international standards.

·         Operating a computer-assisted information service, Inspec, which has the world’s largest computerised database in the English language in physics, electro-technology, computer science and control engineering.

·         Providing an extensive range of lectures, meetings, conferences, seminars and knowledge transfer networks.

·         Providing business and technical information on electrical, electronic, IT and manufacturing subjects through publication of journals, proceedings, and books.

·         Operating an Internet web-television service: http://www.iet.tv/.

The Institution comprises technical experts through to business leaders, across industry, government and academia, such that all facets of IPR are important to its membership.
