Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry
The Association of the British
Pharmaceutical Industry ("ABPI") brings together companies in Britain producing
prescription medicines, other organisations involved in pharmaceutical research
and development and those with an interest in the pharmaceutical industry
operating in the UK. ABPI member companies manufacture and supply approaching
90% of the medicines prescribed through the National Health Service and are
major exporters to countries all over the world. The pharmaceutical industry
exists to make people better. Its first priority is to make medicines that are
effective and safe. The industry and the public have a shared interest in
improving the health of the nation. It aims to help shape a future where
patients have access to the right medicines at the right time and, in so doing,
help to save lives and make the NHS budget go further.
The pharmaceutical industry spends
around £9million a day in the search for new medicines and its research and
products are underpinned by a variety of intellectual property rights, which are
key to the industry. ABPI has an Intellectual Property Committee whose task is
to monitor developments in this field and promote the interests of the industry
as far as IP is concerned. ABPI and its IP Committee maintain close and regular
contact with government bodies to convey the views of industry on key issues.
